We just hit the ground in Detroit when we noticed a large bottom lit smoke tower coming up somewhere to the north of Jefferson East. When the request for an additional tower ladder and engine cam in minutes later we realized the smoke was due to a large scrap yard fire at 1943 Mack. The yard containe a huge scrap pile consisting of everything from cars to appliances. The crews set up 2 ladders and multiple hand lines to douse the burning pile as personel from the yard tore open the pile with a large excavator equipped with grasping jaws. Fire fighters would remain on scene for approximately 5 hours to bring the situation under control.
