Multi Alarm Commercial Structure Fire 250 Main St South 2/18/11

Shortly after 1am Southbury Volunteers were summonded for a fire at 250 Main St South an "L" shaped woodframe mixed occupancy which house 14 small businesses. On of the businesses at that address was a flower shop owned by the fire chief's wife. The first arriving units found the the structure well involved with fire coming from three quarters of the roofline of the structure. A call went out for mutual aid from Newtown, Oxford, and Woodbury for ladder trucks, additional engines, and manpower. With the strucure so well involved in flame an exterior attack was the only solution so the three ladder trucks were set up and multiple handlines stretched to flood the structure from all sides and darken down the fire. With the main fire darkened down interior crews were able to enter the structure where it was deemed safe to extinguish and hot spots. Heavy equipment was brought in to knockdown the unstable sections as they were in imminent danger of collapse. Though crews put in a massive effort the 14 businesses were destroyed. The Souhbury FIre Marshal was on scene and along with the State Fire Marshal's Office investigators and immediate investigation into the cause of the fire was started.
