Two Alarm Structure Fire 287 D Welton Way 01/25/11

With multiple calls for heavy black smoke coming from the High St Ext area police units were dispatched to the area to determine the source. As the police headed to the area Thomaston Volunteers were dispatched for a structure fire at 287 D Welton Way. The first due units arrived to heavy smoke and fire showing from a living space over the garage and heavy smoke pushing from the eaves and ridge vet of the single family home. A second alarm was struck and mutual aid units from Northfield and Terryville responded to the scene as well a 1 engine from Watertown to cover the Thomaston headquarters. Crews stretched in to quickly knock down the bulk of the fire and would spend an extended period of time overhauling and ventilating the second floor and attic space of the home. A male resident of the home suffered some exposure to heat and smoke as he was awaken to the fire b smoke alarms in the home. He was evaluated by Thomaston EMS but refused treatment. In addition two cats were found and evacuated from the structure without incident. The fire marshal was also on scene to investigate the cause of the fire which caused extensive fire and smoke damage to the home.
