Multiple Alarm Furniture Store Fire 1330 South Main St 09/18/17

A passing motorist reported smoke coming from a commercial building at South Main and Piedmont Sts in Waterbury's Southend shortly after 6am. First due Engine 4 arrived to heavy smoke showing on all sided of the Discount Furniture Store at 1330 South Main. Companies used forcible entry to gain access to the building and make a quick search for two occupants who were said to be living in the business. Withno one found companies went to work attempting to reach the fire in a maze of furniture and zero visibilty conditions. Truck 3 went to the roof to attempt a verticle ventilation. as the building pushed out dense black smoke turning the neighborhood to night. the decision was made to go defensive as the heavy flames venting from the roof would cause an immiment collapse. Horns and sirens along with radio evacuation tones were sounded and all companies working inside were ordered to leave their line in place and make an immediate exit. With all present and accounted for masterstreams were deloyed and Truck 1 & 3 began water tower operations. Companies would battle the fire and spend hours on scene wetting the hot spots.
