Waterbury Fire Department

Multi Alarm Vacant Three Decker 45 Wildwood Ave 04/18/12

Waterbury Fire was dispatched for a possible structure fire at 45 Wildwood Ave. Crews arrived to find a vacant wood frame 3 decker with the third floor heavily involved and threatening the exposures on either side. With all hands from the 1st alarm assignment going to work the battalion chief requested an additional engine to the scene. As crews worked to get an adequate water supply one more engine was requested to assist companies on scene. With a partial collapse of the roof companies worked with multiple hand lines from the ground and the vacant three decker which was the d-side exposure to battle the fire. An attempt to use Truck 2 as a water tower was abandoned due to a poor water supply as crews continued to flood the structure with from he ground. The main body of fire was knocked down in about and hour and a half and the fire finally declared under control in about two and a half hours from the initial alarm. Fire fighters would remain on scene well into the night drowning structure to avoid a rekindle.
