Scrap Yard Fire Greystone Rd Ext 03/20/17

With heavy black smoke billowing in the sky from the north end of Waterbury in the vicinity of the Plymouth town line.Waterbury crews went searching for the source as multiple calls flooded dispatch. With several vacant and occupied commercial structures and the Waterbury Airport on Mt Tobe Rd they were not sure if there was a massive structure fire or downed aircraft in the area. They found it to be a large auto scrap yard fire touched off by a worker cutting a gas tank with a sawsall. With the municipal water supply far from the scene they utilized mutual aid from Terryville's Engine 8 to draft from the Greystone falls and a relay pumping operation to get water on the fire which would bur most of the afternoon.
