Water Search 6/4/10 Crestbrook Park

Shortly after 8pm the Watertown Police Department received a call that there was possibly a missing boater at the lake on the Crestbrook Country Club Property. The large man made lake which serves as a water source for the town owned golf course's irrigation system is a favorite spot for fishing and boating with non motorized craft. Three people were occupying a canoe which overturned, 2 made it to shore but the third, a 31 year old Watertown resident slipped below the surface not to be seen again by his companions. First units on scene activated the Thomaston Fire Department Dive Team which would activate the regional dive teams and bring divers, suppport teams, and boats from Bantam, Morris, and Plymouth as well. Fire crews searched the banks with hope the man got a shore and was simply disoriented as divers deployed in the approximate area of the accident to search below the surface. After approximately 5 hours of searching with divers and underwater cameras and no success the operation was halted. Crews would return early the next morning to find the man and recover his body. The incident remains under investigation by the Connecticut Enviromental Police as they are in charge of water safety and investigate all drownings in Connecticut.
