Tour Of The Fireboat 343

After months of planning. multiple phone calls, and seemingly endless red tape we secured a tour of the new FDNY FIreboat the "343" . This boat is dedicated to the 343 members of the FDNY who lost their lives in the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. Replacing the John D McKean at Marine Station 1 on Pier 40 on the Hudson River it is the largest fireboat in the world. In full pump mode it can pump 50,000 gallons a minute fromt it's remote controlled monitors and the main bow mounted water cannon is capable of 16,4500 gpm itself. The cabin and helm are capable of being pressurized to allow complete safety from both biological, hazmat, and radiological contaminaton. Many thanks go out to Doc Johnson, Ret FDNY Commissioner Joe Higgins, and the Crew on duty on the day of our visit for arranging the trip, making the required contacts, and giving us a very hospitable tour of the vessel.
