Fatal Two Alarm House Fire Sixth St 10/02/09

Just before 7pm tones were transmitted in Ansonia for a structure fire with people trapped in the house. Police arrived to find heavy smoke showing from a large multiple family dwelling and neighbors yelling that people were trapped in the house. Three Ansonia police officers entered the building and pulled a wheelchair bound woman from the fire, as fire crews arrived they performed a male patient from one of the upper floors of the structure who had succumbed as a result of the fire. With the fire raging out of control and the building cleared of victims airhorns were sounded and the order given by the OIC for all fire fighters to exit the building and a defensive operation taken up. With multiple lines stretched and Ansonia Truck 7 setup to the roof was vented an the ground and truck crews flooded the building to try and control the blaze. Heavy fire vented through the cut in the roof and from roof line of the structure. The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes from the time of initial alarm. Crews would remain on scene throughout the night overhauling and assisting the Ct State Police Fire Investigation Unit which was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
