Wind Toppled Tree Crashes On To Postal Truck Fatally Injuring Driver

As fire crews throughout the state chased downed trees and power lines firefighters in Bethlehem were dispatched for freak accident which fatally injured a rural route mail carrier. A large tree toppled by high winds fell taking out power lines and landed on a postal carrier's truck making deliveries on Weekeepeemee Rd near the intersection of Crane Hollow Rd. The initial caller was not sure if anyone was in the truck but the first fire unit on the scene confirmed that the driver was entrapped. A priority 1 call was made to Connecticut Light ad Power as live primaries were in contact with the vehicle, and a mutual aid call to Woodbury was made for extrication assistance. With the power quickly cut crews went to work to clear the tree and attempt to extricate the driver. As the victim was disentangled EMS personal determined that her injuries were inconsistent with the ability to sustain life and the patient was pronounced dead at the scene. Crews would remain on scene for and extended period of time as the accident investigation was performed by the Connecticut State Police.
